Metro Independent of Bikes on the 4th...

A reminder:

If you are a cyclist who likes to go 'mulit-modal' and get the bike to a distant velo-spot on the weekends, remember-- NO BIKES on board Metro on the 4th of July.

That's been a policy with Metro, which cites the heavy use the stations get when the crowds head down to the Mall to celebrate Independence Day.

  1. Does that holiday ban apply to properly covered folding bikes too? They are allowed at rush hour on normal days, so I would think they'd be allowed on holidays.

  2. Tim: you ask a very good question. I didn't know, so I called Metro. And the answer given by spokesman Steven Taubenkibel was that all bikes are indeed barred from Metro on July 4th. I asked, "Even fold-up bikes?" I had to clarify what I meant by that--and the reply was that yes, the ban includes even fold-ups.

So I asked if oversized luggage was barred from Metro on the 4th of July. The answer was no, that was allowed.
I've seen many makes of fold-ups offer carrying cases, or slings that look like bags. My guess is they might pass muster.

It would be interesting to see what experience others have had.
